The real-life Misty of Chincoteague was born in 1946 at the Beebe Ranch in Chincoteague, Virginia. A few months later, Misty was bought as a weanling by Marguerite Henry. Inspired by her purchase and the Beebe Ranch, Marguerite wrote the novel “Misty of Chincoteague” which was published in 1947.
