Elvish Warhorse Art!

Hello Elvish Warhorse lovers!! Congrats everyone on creating a new crossbreed! New art is set to come your way but first, we need to start the process.

I will work with you all in this forum to get specifics about what you want in your breed.  Our workflow will be:

  1. Campaign contributors and club members post reference images. Reference images can be to pick a pose, mane/tail type, conformation-specifics etc. When you post a photo let me know what you like the most in the photo. NOTE: Poses, conformation etc. have some limitations such as no rearing poses and requests must be true to life and make sense for the breed cross %. Ex. We won't do a pony-sized base for a Clydesdale x Perch cross, that would be quite odd.

  2. After submitting ref photo submissions, I will look through and make a master list of suggestions for review. At this time, you all can chat about what you want to see specifically. Ex. Morgans have a bridle path because that was a highly requested option and Irish Cobs have tons of hair because people valued that the most. NOTE: Should there be any aspect that isn't fully agreed upon I will present the best options based on Thunderbolts ability with input from the club president.

  3. Using the final list of requirements, Thunderbolt will begin the greyscale process and sketches of the pose will be posted here. With this, feel free to be a bit picky, add suggestions, and the club may also make large changes if all are agreeable. Ex. Turns out you all don't like the head turned toward the viewer, you'd like it facing forward.

  4. Based on feedback, a second draft will be posted to confirm that everyone likes the base. At this time, no major changes can occur but small or minor changes can occur. Ex. You want the eye facing upward vs. forward.

  5. Once the second draft is approved a greyscale will be completed and we will move into the coloring phase.

  6. Once all the coloring is done, Bedouin and I will work on the back end to make the breed a reality. This involves a bit of code and inputting.

  7. Bask in the glory of completing a crossbreed campaign and ogle at those beautiful ponies.

Note, with the backlog of campaigns and upcoming breed redos we expect sketch and greyscale phases to take up to 4 months. Campaigns are currently at the top of our to-do list for the next bases and will be added to our queue alongside the next breed redos.

We are in phase 2. Please post feedback on sketches by March 11th.

Alright! Sorry for the delay with this, but here’s my Elvish warhorse refs:

This is my preferred pose, but I understand if it’s too close to “rearing” which is disallowed. I do really want it action-y though, looking like the horse is about to jump/launch:

What I like about this one: The shape of the neck and chest is exactly what I had in mind for EWHs, I like the flow of the mane, and the placement of the back legs, the thick chest and hindquarters are ideal too.

What I don’t like: the way the front legs overlap, how high up the near shoulder and leg are, how low the tail is held.

This image better details the position of the tail and perhaps the front legs, with the Arabian blood the tail could be up a bit more even.

If that pose is unacceptable/ too close to rearing, here is an alternative I’d be alright with:

What I like about it: The arch of the neck and positioning of the head and forelegs, how the tail is held.

What I don’t like: how the angle makes the hindquarters look too small and partially hides the tail, I’d prefer the horse to be more side-on to the “camera” rather than that angle, and the rear legs in a more solid position (if we have to go with this alternative pose).

The above image is also my reference for the head shape/type: a gently dished face with an elegant look about it and alert ears.

Ref for body type:

These are big bois, with a strong chest, solid body and hindquarters, and large hooves.

What I like about the image: the chest, shoulders, hindquarters and hooves.

What I don’t like: The neck and head are the wrong shape, and the tail is held too low.

Hooves:

I imagined some light feathering like this, not so much it covers the hooves - and nice big feets.

Mane and Tail:

Thick and long! The tail needs to be held up more, and I’d like both the mane and tail to have a slight natural wave to them.

I couldn’t find a mane ref to really demonstrate what I mean- they’re all either straight or super curly. This was the best example I could find so.. I guess some artistic freedom would be great with this one xD

Anyway, there’s all my ideas I’ve been collecting :)

Found what I mean for a “wavy” mane and tail :P of course just after I posted

I love the wavy mane and tail and I love the poses that Mouse posted - they'd look gorgeous with their feathering and body type!

Hello!

Here's the first sketch for EWH! It's the first draft, so if the proportions or pose needs to be corrected, or changed, let me know! Major corrections/changes are okay at this point.

There are two versions of the head to choose from - A (head straight ahead) and B (head tilted towards the viewer). Version A is more dynamic and more in line with the pose, but due to the head placement some of the cosmetic items placed on the forehead and head markings may not be fully visible in it, so it's up to You to decide which version do You prefer. Tack can be fitted to either version.

I prefer B because you can still see face markings like the crescent and heart.

I prefer option A, but option B is excellent too!

Edit; Option B has an Arabian feel to it; just my thoughts.

I prefer B just because it allows you to see more face markings, but I really love how A flows with the pose too!
