Bits and Auction

I have help developed another game similar to this one. One thing we did that helped a lot in multiple areas was having a “private farm” do a minimum bid on auction horses of 2500. Not only did it give players away to make a little bits but it also cleaned up a lot of unwanted horses form the system. It also boosted the game economy because it allows players to have a base price for horses. For me as a new player, I'm at a stand still making any money. I purchased show horses but I can't even go back in show log to see which ones are showing well. Show horses should be a high valued horses on here but I was able to purchased on for 4 bits on auction. Which I guess is my next suggestion, make showing a key value to this game. Make it easy for player to track a horse show placements so they can see if there horses are profitable. Open up in game generated show that are limited to player levels so new players are against new players and older players are against older players. Of course keep the player made shows going too. Maybe add a store option where players can sell their items like dyes, gems….back to the game. I see a ton of dye on auction that arnt moving. Could maybe do npc offer of 250 for dyes…just an idea.

If owners of site would like some more economy ideas. I would be happy to share what has worked for our site vs what hasn't. I love seeing more games like this coming around.

I'm a little bit confused, what do you mean, you can't go back in a show log to see which ones are doing well? There are two places to find this information at, though the one location, clears with each daily rollover, the other location, goes far back as long as the horse has shows, UNLESS it was frozen for a long while and I think it kind of clears after a while, as I have some horses that have been frozen and has kinda disappeared.

As for valued as a show horse? Unforunately that's NOT fully what some folks look for. There will be some players, that will sell their horses for cheap at 1 bit as a starting bid that is their choice to do so. Some folks? Just look for color for their bloodstock/Crossbreed Campaigns.

I've been barking up the tree to sell items back for SO LONG it hurts because the problem is, people don't always ask for prices and even then? Stuff isn't always concrete. Some people, could be selling dyes for too much and that's not what they should be sold for, I've seen it similar with ingots, people want way more than what the going rate for them is at. It's also summer right now, some people may not necessarily like the summer dyes, so they might not sell neither. The economy can fluctuate heavily and just depends on who is around/on/active and who needs what etc.

As well, for future reference, technically this section should have been archieved as we use Feature Requests instead, so folks can upvote/downvote ideas and make comments etc.

I actually don't think it's that hard to make money in this game.  I'm new too but I already have about a million bits banked and that's with me spending to buy estate upgrades, horses, and tack for encrusting.  It actually seems to me that this game's economy is much more forgiving than other games where a new player might grind for a year before reaching a comfortable cushion in their funds.  And I haven't really done anything outlandish in my opinion to get bits, mostly I'm just showing my horses and selling horses I don't want/need to other players.  I'm also taking advantage of achievement rewards and the game room for quick cash on hand.

I also think it's pretty easy to track which horse is doing well when you have a smaller herd which a new playet would.  I use the logs on the individual horse pages to see how they've placed in shows and the color coding there makes it super easy for me to distinguish at a glance which horses are doing well and which are not.  When I see a lot of green numbers I know the horse is successful or at the very least is making profit.  Red in the show history means I start paying extra attention to that horse and actually tracking how many losses it's taking.  If I see more red than green for more than 3 days I'll either switch the horse from halter to discipline(where they tend to do better), pop them into career path where they make money no matter what, or just sell the horse or release it to the game's rescue.  So far the majority of my horses make decent money and by using my estate overview to keep track I can see that I'm up anywhere from conservatively 12-15k bits a day with my horses.  It was less in the beginning but I had no issues keeping my profit ahead of my expenses.

I do like the idea of npcs who buy back dyes though.  That kind of already exists with the quests you can get in Hoofbeat Plains but of course those are only randomly given as you explore so there may be days you don't get any or get some for dyes you don't have, plus many of the dye quests are “FIND x dye” which doesn't accept older dyes you have.  So I think perhaps an npc dedicated to dyes would be good.  I'd lower the buyback price to keep it in line with the quests though, perhaps $75-$110 bits per dye.  It also might be nice if the price of dyes went up or down depending on the day.  Like perhaps the npc wanted blue dye one day and was willing to pay a higher price and the next day was looking for a seasonal dye.  That introduces an element of actual engaging play to the mechanic vs it just being an item dump.

I really don't like the idea of the game buying horses at auction.  Users can already set the starting bid for their horses as well as the amount by which bids increase, so if someone wants to give new players a chance to win a great horse for less an automatic bid by the game gets in the way.  There's also the rescue, which is supposed to be where unwanted horses go in game, and it actually costs to surrender a horse there.  If we have an automatic game mechanic for auction where players make money for horses no one wants the rescue will never be used.  And the rescue is a good place for new players to grab a cheap horse to make money with, many of the horses I started with came from there and are now the foundation of my own horses I'm breeding to suit my needs.  I would not like for the rescue to be rendered obsolete by a new auction bot. Edit: There is also the matter of this game bid mechanic would mean the auction page would rapidly become cluttered with poor confirmation 1 star horses nobody wanted because users would know it was a free money source once the auction ended.  Yeah, REALLY don't like that idea, right now you're almost guaranteed that horses up for auction are at minimum to be decent buys since it makes no sense to list a horse no one will bid on.  I'm afraid an autobid feature would destroy that and then we have 20+ pages of auctions for horses people don't want just because the game buys there.
