Need a few tips/pointers ❤️

I am new, and I was hoping someone could help me out ❤️. I am breeding cob walkers because I think they are just so cute! I was wondering what the best way to make money is, such as; breeding and selling, selling items, studs, etc.? Another question I have is, how do you know what the fair price is for items, and how rare they are? The last question I had was, what determines placings in Halter shows?? I thought it was confo (the green-red bar above their picture, not sure if I had the right term in mind), but looking back at the competitors, horses with lower confo stats were placing higher at times, and I didn't really see a pattern ❤️. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and I appreciate any and all answers I can get! I love the game so far, and I'm honored and excited to be a part of the community!
Howdy! Welcome to Horsefable!
I breed Irish Cobs and Mustangs! If you ever need Irish Cobs for your breeding project let me know! I have a bunch you can use for stud/brood.
The best way to earn money is to have your horses enter competitions [halter/discipline] or work. I find that I make the most money with disciplines, but for those shows the horses need to be equipped with tack (which costs money) in order to do well. You can buy tack on the General Store page!
Typically for an item to be considered “rare” it either needs to be from a release years ago or a seasonal item from events/holidays. Most of the stuff you collect in game either through pop-ups, mine, or hoofbeat plains isn't considered rare but can usually sell for a fair price. I have seen treat ingredients (carrots, apples, molasses, oats, etc.) sell for about 2.5k-5k per item. Dyes tend to sell for less, especially the common dyes like red, green, blue, black, etc. I have seen people sell those for about 500 bits a bottle. Seasonal dyes tend to go for a bit higher. These seasonal dyes you are seeing in game right now are the spring set, which features more pastel colors like mint, dandelion yellow, thistle, etc. These current season dyes sell for about 2-4k bits a piece. Out of season dyes, can sell for a lot more!!! Soon the season in game will switch to summer, so the spring dyes you collect now will be worth a bit more. I have seen bottles sell for 8-10k depending on the color/how long ago the last time it was obtainable. However, this is just from what I have seen (and what I have personally spent lol) on certain items. Other “rare” and seasonal items include any flower (besides roses), horse backgrounds, animal companions, themed tack/wearable items, etc. These I have seen sell for quite a bit depending on what it is. Companions typically sell for 10k+ a piece, depending on the animal and when it was last available. Wolves (which are the most common companion to find) sell for about 8-10k a piece.
All that being said, please take my pricing with a grain of salt. This is just from what I have personally seen and what I have personally paid for certain items.
As far as halter shows goes, it depends on both the green bar at top and the skills of your horse. (At least this is from my understanding.) The skills of your horse can be seen when you go to the horses menu page (like you would to take care of your horses) and then you click on the little “bar graph” icon. If you scroll down, you will see a space for skills. You should see six bars each showing a different area of your horses skills. The six skills are patience, adaptability, communication, attentiveness, aptitude, and tolerance. As your horse participates in halter shows, these skills will increase over time. (THOUGH IT IS VERY SLOW!) Typically horses with higher skills levels tend to do better. Sometimes though, horses have a fluke a they place like last. Idk why this is but it just occasionally happens. Still, despite this, they will continue to level. I also find that wild horses and horses from the foundation store start with higher skills in these areas and tend to better at halter shows as a result. Again, these are just all my observations from playing for a year, so take my advice with a grain of salt! But we are happy to have you aboard here on Horsefable! Always nice to see new faces :)

Making Money
1) Careers. Careers have no entry fee and always net you some bits. A horse can be careered 5 times a day (each time takes 30 minutes). It can be a nice way when low on bits to have some horse related income.
2) Exploring! While you can find bits, gems, and sometimes Ingots in the Dark Horse Mines, the Hoofbeat Plains will usually be better for making bits off of. Between items like dyes, certain decor items, and wild horses its usually pretty easy to get into a good system and turn around and sell or auction things for bits. Wild horses especially if you can find what genes and breeds will catch interest can bring you in a nice income through Horse Auctions sometimes. Like the below splurge though, this also is very community driven so keep your eyes open for changes around the player base! When I first started out though seasonal dyes, treat items, and wild horses CARRIED me financially. A good spot to check out is the Hall of Fame Horse Totals tab. This shows you how many UNFROZEN horses there are in game for each breed. For example a lot of people are into Mustangs right now so you will have a better time finding buyers for those, especially if they have fun genes. They can lead to some good bid wars in auctions. But Welsh Pony B doesn't have a lot of player interest and there will be less eyes on them in auction which will make them harder to find homes for usually.
3) Art! If you find yourself more artistically inclined you can always pop on over to the Art Sales Forum and sell things like recolors, custom art, etc. Just make sure to read the Rules Thread and properly credit if needed. Sales may not always be the most active thing in the world, but it can bring in bits + ingots if you can pull in enough interest :)
4) If you have the founds, and good horses for it, Halter + Disc shows can make nice money. I don't personally touch Disc shows almost ever on my accounts (outside of specific horses). But Halter shows, especially here on my main, make me around a million bits give or take EVERY WEEK. The downside? Shows have entry fees, and you could end up losing money not gaining money. Normally this option is not recommended for newer players as a reliable income and a lot of players will urge you to learn more about these options before depending on them.
5) It won't make you mass money, but sometimes anything is better than nothing you can always go play around in the Game Room when board for some spare 100 bits here and there.
Horse Breeding with the result of selling note: While some players can make decent bits off of this, there are many players who also struggle. If you can find the right breeds, genes, and player interest by all means get your bit making on! A lot of factors can go into this though on whether or not your horses will sell. For example some players look for high ps, some players only look for specific genes, some players look for clean lines while others dont mind inbreeding, a large portion of players look for higher TB (Training Boost), there are so many factors and they all depend on who sees the horse.
Pricing Items / Item Rarity
Checking places like [General Store] / [Emporium when it has items] / [Ingot Store for packages] / or [Market Trades] can give good insight into some items general pricing or player swayed pricing and interest. As West said above, some items like certain dyes and decorations can only be found in their respected season or event. Some other items like year tack (example 2023 tack set) are no longer found in the game, but can be found through players that still have those items in their inventory. The official HoFa Discord Server also is a good place to go to get Price Checks on things as there is a whole channel devoted to that kinda thing. NOTE I am about to ramble, BUT just remember prices heavily sway with the player base. What sells for 10k today could sell for 500 bits tomorrow or have no interest at all. Any numbers I give are numbers that I have seen stick around for longer spans of times and each one is not an end all be all. Prices are very give or take, the best way to learn pricing and player interest is to keep your eyes open, make notes, and play around a bit.
General tack and items that can be found all year in the General Store normally won't sell well if it can be bought for bits already. However the items in there that cost ingots (say cook books, breed coins, etc) can always be sold for bits instead or a lower ingot price given there is player interest in them. You just probably wont get any bites for pricing them at the going general store prices. If selling a normally ingot item for bits, the usual ratio is 1 ingot = 500 bits. Sometimes in the Ingot store you will also find items that can be bought in bundles (Packages Tab) and this can also help kinda give a price point to items, just note that items available now can increase in value later when no longer on sale. Out of season items will USUALLY have an increased value than when they are actively in season, but this is not always true for all items. This is when watching Market Trades can come in handy to see what items seem to be selling, for what price, or what doesn't seem to be selling or maybe not selling because priced too high.
If in doubt and not in the discord you can always add your items into a trade and instead of setting a price, you can click the box “Open to Offers” and give the trade some time to gain offers. This can be a good way to gauge the communities interest in items + possible prices for said items. Just make sure to check back in to look for offers so you can either accept ones you feel are fair or if not feeling it you can cancel the trade or wait for the timer to run out.
Roses, Grey Wolves, and more common decor items will often have no interest or very low interest + value. We had a small span of time grey wolves sold like crazy for 10k a piece, but that player seems to have gotten their fill of grey wolves and left the market place lmao. Dyes can net good money if you can figure out the ones players seem to like the most (for example wine dye is pretty popular, but pollen green tends to have less interest so may sell slower / at lower price). Basic Dyes usually sell for 500 bits or less, though popular ones like purple can reach 1k bits if lucky. When I sell seasonal dyes I have normally done anywhere between 2k-10k Bits depending on the dye, season, and how much I know it has player interest (and ones I have a HARD time selling, I will go lower if I want them out of my inventory). Some common pricing I have seen for treat related things are 5k per ingredient (Oat, Clover, etc), 8-10k per Molasses / Peppermint (P. only available in winter) / and Whistles, 10k per Regular Treat, 20k per Sweet Treat. Gems (Dark Horse Mine) I usually see go for around 3k per.
Just in case it helps: (Sometimes dyes are added, if season gain dyes you will see it in the news when we switch to that season)
Basic Dyes - Black, Blue, Green, Grey, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red, Yellow
Spring Dyes - Dandelion, Dusty Green, Lavender, Mint, Orange Crush, Pollen Green, Powder Blue, Rose Gold, Thistle
Summer Dyes - Bubble Gum, Cobalt Blue, Electric Purple, Neon Green, Sky Blue, Sunburn, Teal
Fall Dyes - Burnt Leaf, Dark Emerald, Deep Blue, Midnight, Mulberry, Mustard, Sage, Velvet Red, Wine
Winter Dyes - Cinnamon, Dark Teal, Deep Amethyst, Evergreen, Frasier Fir, Ice, Navy, Snowcream, Sugar Cookie
Halter Show Placement
For starters this wiki page for Halter Arena may be of some help. Note the wiki is currently being updated so in the future this page may look a lil different. But the basics for judging in halter shows are this:
- Breed Standards [Heavy Weight] Your horses Conformation (BS) plays a big part into placements, but is not the only factor
- Skills [Bonus to Score] These are factored in with a lower % to add a bonus to your horses score
- Judge Bias [RNG Factor] Every show you enter has some rng as to which 3 Breed Standards are judged normally and which 3 are judged with a heavier weight.
End Notes
I know this is a lot, and probably to some extent a whole lot of nothing. But the most important things I can tell you are OBSERVE everything because the market changes with the community, USE FEATURES like forums - the discord server - shouts (Blue Button at top of Forums page) etc to advertise and learn, DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS because this game has a lot of moving parts and there are a lot of people willing to help you with any parts that are confusing. And most important, find what you enjoy and have fun. If you ever find you are in a tough spot in the game or need some 1 on 1 help you are always welcome to reach out :) And now that it's 2 38am for me and I have been typing for longer than I probably should have, I will shush and go back to some chaotic thing I am working on. OH AND YES I probably forgot something and if I did I am betting 1 bit that at some point forgottenland sees this and adds to it
