You can hear a herd in the distance... but where is it?

Hello all!
I am still very new to HoFa but I'm really enjoying myself. Something I'm having trouble with though are the wild horses.
Whenever I go exploring I get that message that you can hear a herd somewhere in the distance pretty often. But so far I've only encountered a wild horse twice. Am I doing something wrong?
Nope. They pop up every so often. One thing to note is that after you sucessfully catch one you won't see another one for 15 minutes. :)
