Carriers

Quick question: How do you know if your horse is a skew, dapple, or calico carrier???

I believe if you test genes at the vet it will show up in the genes tab when you look at a horse. There is also a way to tell in that long line of letters and numbers that are the horse's "genes" but I don't know which symbol is which besides I think dapple is "da" or "dada".

Keep moving forward.

Dapples are hidden genes and will NOT show up under gene testing. Running that is simply a gamble and that is why in auctions you sometimes see ndap?

Skewed also does not show up under genes when you gene test them.

Carriers with hidden genes like that hard to figure out since they aren't visible and just a chance/guess. I had some horses suddenly become dappled and I was so confused until I saw a stud on the dam's side was actually dappled but I didn't go back far enough to see if there was more.

I cannot say for Calico genes. I think they mostly stem from Tobianos somehow but not sure. Okay I looked at the Discord and did a search, its Cream and Tobiano gene but again, outside of that, I do not know much about it.

calico is just a random chance of happening on any cream + tobiano horse and doesn't pass down, so there's no genetics involved.

All three of these do not show up as specific genes in a horse's genetic code.

Skewed roan, if I remember correctly, is determined by variations? I think I remember seeing a few people figuring out that certain variations of markings, bred with a roan horse, would produced a skewed roan.

Calico is basically luck based. If you have a horse with cream and tobiano, there is a small chance it will develop the calico coloring.

Dapple is a hidden gene. My preferred method of dealing with dapples is keeping track of the lineages for possible carriers and testing for positive/negative carriers. For example, if I bred a non-dapple to a dapple, and I'm not sure if the foal got the dapple gene or not, I use them in the Foal Predictor once they hit 3yo and pair them with an actual dapple horse and see if any of the foals made come out showing dapple. If they do, then I know that horse received the heterozygous form of the dapple gene.
