When breeding, many of us have likely had trouble getting the foal we want. ESPECIALLY when the parents have unique coat colors. I've specifically noticed that the "Skewed Roan" and "Manchado" coat patterns are especially hard to get on a foal. This could also have to do with the horses being bred. For example, It's hard to get an Appaloosa coat on a Friesian because Friesians are mainly black. Maybe that has something to do with it? Idrk anymore ๐Ÿค”

Friesians dont come in Appaloosa spotted colors, so you will never get one unless you grade it. Those colors are are and you arent supposed to get them easily, thats the point

it's less about breed and more about genetics though? like Maki said friesians just don't have leopard genes, if you tried crossing purebred appaloosas and knabstruppers you'd get tons of leopard spotted horses because both breed can have those genes. on the other hand if you crossed purebred quarter horses and welsh ponies you'd never see leopard at all. if you pay attention to genetics you'll know how likely it is to get what you want and can even plan out to get your odds to 100% in some cases.

as for skewed roan, it's a variation so it's just rng whether the foal is skewed or not (assuming roan is passed on to the foal in the first place)

True, I believe it's more about genetics than the breed. I was just saying that depending on the breed, chances for certain coat colors/patterns can vary.

Of course because they are rare but some will never happen in a purebred

Yes genetics matter, but certain breeds only carry certain genes.  LP and PATN genes aren't found in Friesians, but are in Appaloosas and Knabstruppers.  To get a LP and PATN gened Friesian, you have to cross in a breed that naturally carries those genes, and then breed back to a Friesian until you get a Grade Friesian.  So it would look something like this:
Friesian x Appaloosa = 50% Friesian x Friesian = 75% Friesian x Friesian = 87.5% Friesian x Friesian = 93% Friesian x Friesian = Grade Friesian. 

It's similar to how the Merle gene in Poodles or Frenchies isn't natural in those breeds, or Silver coats in Labradors, because there was another breed that carried the gene mixed into the bloodline somewhere in the pedigree.

Yea, i've been breeding LP and PATN horses to my fris so I can get a good coat coloring. It takes forever tho lol

It really does. I started grading a lot more horses and its a slow process. Especially since I dont like breeding right away

Yea, I wish horses could breed when they become 2 yrs old instead of 3; it would rlly speed things up
