In short though - Careers at the start.  If you buy a few horses from other players with higher stats (I'd say 1000+ stats in the correct areas for their discipline) they can make money from discipline shows.  If you get a few 4-5* horses you can register them in their breed club and enter them into halter shows.  Careers are free to enter, so theres no cost involved in making money.  Discipline and Halter shows can have extensive fees at the higher levels, but they can also bring in more money overall.

Put your horses in career, select 'Model Horse' from the career drop down, then enter them in careers 5 times throughout the day.
